President’s Report:

We are nearing the end of the year and that means some great things are about to happen at the El Dorado Rod & Gun Club. Our annual meeting and election for officers and directors will take place on December 7, 2009. Would you like to be an officer or director of the El Dorado Rod & Gun Club? Nominations are now open for the upcoming election December 7, 2009. Please plan on attending this important meeting. The Meeting will be held at 7pm, El Dorado County Senior Center, 937 Spring St., Placerville.

To inform the club of recent and upcoming legislation both here in California and the country we have a number of great speakers. From the NRA Ed Worley and Paul Payne will be attending our meeting. If you’re not interested in the club election please make sure to attend this meeting for no other reason but to hear the NRA take on anti-gun legislation.  Also I am hoping that Tom Pedersen from the CRPA will be attending to give us and update on California legislation from the point of view of the California Rife & Pistol Association.

The Board of Directors has once again addressed the issue of the expense to produce the printed and mailed newsletter every month. In order to keep costs down so that we can best use our funds for the operation and maintenance of our facility we have decided to reduce the USPS mailed newsletter to only once a quarter but still produce an eNews every month. From this month going forward the paper newsletter will only go out in December, April, July and October.  Please encourage everyone to sign up for our eNews by going to our web site and sign up.

REMINDER! The El Dorado Rod & Gun Club has always been proud to help support our youth. Rifle or Pistol Range fees for under age 18 are only $2. (Except Defensive Pistol). Today’s youth is our future and it is our responsibility to share our sport, pass on the traditions this great country was founded on and keep them safe in the process. Where would we be today if our parents had not taught us? Probably not reading a newsletter from a Gun Club!!

From Candidate for Director John Rice:

I have spent 15 years in the Marine Corps. The last three years as a combat weapons instructor and range officer for Marine security forces. I am currently a range officer for USPSA and the NRA and of course El Dorado rod and gun club.

I currently run the Jr action pistol. I believe as a director I can keep a voice for the Juinors at the range.I would also to expand and grow the Juinor programs we have.

Thank you for your consideration.
John Rice

From Deanna Jones of Placerville Preschoolers:

Once again the El Dorado Rod and Gun Club stepped up to help us raise money for Placerville Preschoolers/Kids’ Kampus! I’d like to thank each of the club members who participated in our October 4th trap shoot, those who were marshals during the event and Rob for helping me coordinate this opportunity for the second time. Club members are always friendly, supportive and willing to help those of us who are beginners enjoy the event by teaching basic skills on the range. I’ll personally try not to bruise next time! We were able to raise over $600.00 for our school through registration and lunch donations. Soon we will start our search for prizes to be donated for our next trap shoot and hope to connect with even more members of the community. Our school is celebrating 50 years in business during 2009 and we know we have the communities of El Dorado County to thank for the opportunity to do a job we love!

See you in the spring!
Deanna Jones

PLINK

From PLINK Leader Steve Morgan:

Please Leave It NRA Klean volunteers will meet at 8am for a Hosted Breakfast at C & T's Cafe just west of the Pollock Pines Safeway Market and Taco Bell.  Take the Sly Park Highway 50 exit 60.  We will convoy from there at 9am east on Hwy. 50, then up Ice House Road to the second small road after the Jones Fork cattle guard, turning right for a few miles where the sign says Picket Pen.  We will be dismantling an abandoned cab over camper, and raking some rocks to clear a safer 200 yard projectile impact area.

If enough volunteers show up we may split of those who want to see some fishing spots in Camino Cove to haul off the remains of another camper that has already had it's skin stripped so it is now just needs breaking up a bit to make a medium pickup load.

Please confirm if you want to help.

Steve phone  530-620-3946, or eMail PLINK@COMCAST.NET

On Sunday, November 2 (the first Sunday in November) at 2 a.m., Daylight Saving Time ends in the United States. This is the second year that Daylight Saving Time is four weeks longer due to the passage of the Energy Policy Act in 2005. The Act, which extends Daylight Saving Time by four weeks from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November, is expected to save 10,000 barrels of oil each day through reduced use of power by businesses during daylight hours.

Notice to all Range Safety Officers:

  • Please remember to carry membership applications with you. We are now at renewal time so this would be a good opportunity for you to get renewals and new members. Remember if you get a new member to allow them to shoot at no-fee for the day.
  • Please print out the current month’s calendar and post at the pistol / rifle ranges. This is very helpful to shooters to have a calendar available at the range. Also remember that the calendar and newsletter are always available on our web site: www.eldoradorodandgun.com

TurkeyJust in time for Thanksgiving…
Ever wonder where the wishbone-breaking contest came from? It’s a tradition dating back to Etruscans in 322 B.C. And it started with a hen, not a turkey.

Back then, when someone wanted an egg he waited for the hen to announce the coming of her product. This led to the belief that the hen could tell the future. If a man wanted to receive an answer to a question, he would draw a circle on the ground and divide it into the 24 letters of the alphabet. Grains of corn were placed in each section, and the cock or hen was led into the circle and then set free. It was believed that the fowl would spell out words or symbols by picking up kernels of corn from the different sections.

After writing the message, the fowl was sacrificed to a special deity and its collarbone was hung out to dry. Then, you’d get to make a wish on the bone. Once dry, two other people got a chance to make a wish by snapping the dried bone with each one pulling on an end. The person with the larger end of the bone got the wish—and it became known as a ‘lucky break.’
